Nerdy magnets awesome-fied!

Posted in Culmination of civilization
July 23rd, 2010 by Cynthia

Lately I’ve been following an excellent series on Slate.com:  Blogging the Periodic Table.  The series features one of my favorite genres: super nerdy historical science.  (That’s a genre, right?)  The author describes the personalities, myths and drama of  the periodic table, element by element.  It’s really fascinating and informative.

Last week there was an entry about Rare Earth elements that surprised me.  Neodymium, the same metal that I’ve been using for my iPhone magnets, is a member of the rare earths!  Is it just me, or did my products just acquire an aura of Science?

Anyway, I really recommend the blog series on Slate.  And when that ends, there’s a whole book.  If I ever get to lounge at the beach, this would definitely be the book I’d bring along.

Do you see all the Science?

The new iPhone is officially here.  It seems anti-climactic now, doesn’t it?  Anyhow the white one is quite pretty.

I usually don’t watch commercials, but while browsing through Slate, I couldn’t resist taking a peek at what the Ad Report Card calls the “greatest ad I’ve ever seen.”

After watching the video, go here for an interesting analysis.

May 12th, 2010 by Cynthia

Steam is available for Mac.  And one of my all-time favorite games, Portal, is free (until May 24)!  See the full article at Gizmodo.

Thanks to lostarchitect for the tip.  What would I do without you?

There’s a giveaway at See Chloe Shop for a $100 Shopbop gift card.  I admit I’m only blogging about this because I can get 5 entries to her giveaway, but it really is a very good prize as far as blogs go.

Take, for example, my own lack of giveaways.  So in lieu of organizing a drawing here, let me refer you to See Cloe Shop.  Even if you don’t enter the giveaway, her blog is a really good (and dangerous) compilation of sales around the internet.

Safe to watch

To make up for the previous video, this one is totally interesting and not gross.  You can even eat while you watch and not feel uncomfortable!

Thanks to my brother for finding this.

Watch at your own risk

I really like the show Man vs. Wild, especially because it reaffirms my indoor, sedentary lifestyle.  Case in point: Bear eating giant larva.

By the way,  have you seen the Man vs. Wild episode with Will Ferrell?  It came out a long time ago, but I still remember how much I enjoyed it.

Update: I don’t think I can eat string cheese for a while.

Wow!

If you haven’t seen this already, the 4th gen iPhone.  The story of how they got possession of the phone sounds like a movie, making already-exciting news even more sensational.  Awesome.

I think we can expect some lawsuits as part of the aftermath.

Sick! (and not in a good way)

Posted in Us
January 30th, 2010 by Cynthia

I have a cold. But it’s not all bad. I also have a working computer (beloved iMac) and I recently discovered the voyeristic joys of fashion blogs. From what I gathered, they basically consist of girls posting pictures of themselves in cute (and sometimes absurd) outfits. Great for this weekend where I need to rest and stay close to the tissue box. All I need now is an iPad so I can read them in bed.
